Everywhere you look, you see water bottles. What is all the fuss about drinking water? Let me explain a few things about how water affects your brain.
Research has shown that when we are thirsty, our bodies really needed water prior to the feeling of “thirsty”. Brain cells need water, and when we are thirsty it is literally our brain screaming for re-hydration. Likewise, it is not surprising that when we are thirsty, we have difficulty with focused attention. It can impair our short-term memory and our long-term memory. This kind of memory is needed for learning the ABCs and numbers, fact about animals, scientific information and later in spelling and arithmetic. So it is important that children have enough fluids, not only for their physical growth, but for their mental and emotional growth as well.
Five Drink up tips:
1. Use a refillable water bottle.
2. Be sure your children takes a water bottle to any sports they are involved with.
3. If your children are of school age, send them with a fresh reusable water bottle daily.
4. Add lemon or cucumber to filtered tap water to give it a fresh taste when drinking water at home.
5. Parents need water too. Consider drinking half of your desired daily water amount by noon and the other half by dinner. Water consumption is especially important for lactating women!
